Uniwersytet ten jest najstarszą i największą uczelnią muzyczną w Polsce, a także jedną z najstarszych w Europie. Swoją tradycję wywodzi ze Szkoły Dramatycznej przy Teatrze Narodowym, kształcącej także śpiewaków, założonej w 1810 r. przez Józefa Elsnera i Wojciecha Bogusławskiego. Jej dzieło kontynuowała Szkoła Główna Muzyki, do której uczęszczał Fryderyk Chopin, a później - pobliski Instytut
