The Kazimierzowski Palace

The Kazimierzowski Palace

It was built in 1634 for King Władysław IV as his summer residence. Over the years it was remodelled and enlarged several times. Between 1765 and 1795 it housed the famous Corps of Cadets - proud of its numerous distinguished graduates (Kościuszko, Niemcewicz, Sowiński, Kniaziewicz, and Sokolnicki). In 1817 the Warsaw High School was moved here along with the by then established Warsaw University.
The Chopin family lived here, in the right outbuilding (The Deputy Rector’s Building). Frederic’s parents ran a highly appreciated boarding house for high school students from the gentry. Many of them remained Frederic Chopin’s lifetime friends. The famous ‘Thursdays’ attracted even the most prominent professors. A plaque with the composer’s portrait placed on the eastern wall of the outhouse informs us that, ‘Frederic Chopin lived here between 1817 and 1827’.
